The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, programming, integration, commissioning, and continuous improvement of automated control systems across our manufacturing operations.

The Controls Engineer will work closely with Mechanical, Electrical, Process, and Maintenance teams to ensure that production equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently. Strong PLC programming skills on Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) platforms are required; experience with Siemens PLC environments (TIA Portal, Step 7) is considered a strong plus.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development

  • Design, develop, and document industrial control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo drives, and safety systems.
  • Create and update electrical schematics, control panel layouts, I/O lists, and network architecture diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent.
  • Specify and select instrumentation, sensors, actuators, and control hardware in accordance with project requirements and applicable standards.
  • Develop control strategies and functional specifications in collaboration with Process and Mechanical Engineering.

Programming and Configuration

  • Program and configure Allen-Bradley PLCs (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix) using Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000.
  • Develop and maintain HMI/SCADA applications in FactoryTalk View (SE/ME); experience with Ignition, Wonderware, or WinCC is a plus.
  • Program and configure Siemens PLCs (S7-1200, S7-1500) using TIA Portal or Step 7 when required (plus).

Troubleshooting and Continuous Improvement

  • Provide technical support to Maintenance and Production teams to troubleshoot and resolve control system issues, minimizing downtime.
  • Analyze equipment performance data to identify improvement opportunities related to OEE, cycle time, quality, and energy consumption.
  • Lead or contribute to continuous improvement projects, root cause analyses (RCA), and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Maintain backups, version control, and documentation for all PLC, HMI, and robot programs.

Safety, Compliance, and Standards

  • Apply safety-related control principles, including safety PLCs, light curtains, E-stops, and safe motion functions.
  • Follow internal EHS policies, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and change management protocols.

Collaboration and Documentation

  • Work cross-functionally with Production, Quality, Maintenance, and external integrators/vendors.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation: user manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance guides, and training materials.
  • Support the training of Maintenance technicians and Operators on new systems and modifications.
